HIV/AIDS Situation in Zambia
The Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) reports that Zambia is one of nine African countries hardest hit by the HIV epidemic, with one in five adults infected with HIV.

Adult prevalence of HIV/AIDS (15–49 yrs): 13.5 – 20.0%
(WHO/UNAIDS 2003)

Estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS (0 –49 yrs):
730 000 – 1 100 000 (WHO/UNAIDS 2003)

Cumulative number of reported AIDS cases:
44 942 (WHO/UNAIDS 2001)

Reported number of people receiving antiretroviral therapy (15–49 yrs): 8 500 (WHO 2004)

Estimated total number needing antiretroviral therapy in 2005:
140 000 (WHO/UNAIDS 2003)

Prevalence of HIV among adults with tuberculosis (15–49 yrs):
62.2% (WHO 2002)
