Non-Governmental Organisations

This section presents various humanitarian NGOs active in Swaziland and provides an overview of their activities. It will include in-depth feature stories, best practises, as well as, organisation profiles which will contain country contact information, office location and contact numbers. We encourage all humanitarian NGOs to regularly update or include their profiles, and by sharing information and work on common strategies and advocacy with both the government and the wider humanitarian community, in order to stress the importance of their work.

The Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organizations (CANGO) is the coordinating body for all Non-Governmental organisations (NGO’s) in Swaziland. CANGO is a non-profit making voluntary organisation, which was founded in 1983 initially as a Coordinating Secretariat for ngo's involved in the promotion of primary health care under the name: The Coordinating Assembly for Non- Governmental Organizations in Primary Health Care. This was in response to an appeal from the Ministry of Health for better coordination of Primary Health Care. This was in response to an appeal from the Ministry of Health for better coordination of Primary Health Care activities in pursuit of the universal goal of Health for all by the year 2000.

In 1987 the constitution was amended to enable this organization to encompass all NGOs in development, thus becoming a true national umbrella body for all NGOs, not only those in the health sector. More than ten years since its formation, CANGO has developed into quite a strong secretariat with an increased capacity.
