The
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were adopted by 189 nations
in the Millennium Declaration of September 2000. The Millennium
Declaration and the eight goals identified have become a road
map for the United Nations in southern Africa in addressing the
triple threat of HIV/AIDS, food security and weakened capacity
for service delivery.
SAHIMS is developing a southern
African information resource centre to support the development
of DevInfo in SADC countries, as well as the monitoring of MDGs
in context of the triple threat of HIV/AIDS, food security and
weakened capacity for service delivery.

Strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Response
Emergency Info Training Workshop, Maputo, Mozambique, 10
- 14 Sept 2007
UN RDT SAHIMS in collaboration with UNICEF, UNDP, OCHA
ROSA, DevInfo, INGC Mozambique together with several
other national disaster management agencies will be
hosting the first ever EmergencyInfo Training Workshop
in southern Africa in Maputo, Mozambique from 10 - 14
September 2007. The training will introduce DevInfo's
latest technology that uses simple hand held computer-PDAs
to quickly capture data during an emergency and convert
raw numbers into meaningful and ready-to-use
information. The PDA will contain ready to use rapid
assessments that can be adapted and used even in a
specialised sector. The PDA data can simply be imported
into a database and then used to access and search for
data by indicators, sources, areas and time periods to
assess the needs of the affected population.
This EmergencyInfo training workshop aims at addressing
one of the key objectives of the UN Regional Director’s
Team (RDT): Building and strengthening national capacity
for disaster preparedness and response. The motivation
for the training is also based on lessons learnt during
the response to the floods and cyclone that recently
affected the region, and follows requests from
humanitarian partners. The workshop will provide
training in EmergencyInfo to delegates from national
disaster management institutes and related agencies
across southern Africa. The focus will be on ensuring
that relevant national baseline data is developed and
available as part of disaster preparedness; and
improving sector/cluster information management
capacity, especially for timely acquisition, processing,
analysis and dissemination of assessment data in
disaster response.
