IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Malawi Food Security Update
The food security situation of some households has
slightly improved, due to harvesting of winter crops
currently underway in some parts of the country.
However, only a small number of households in a limited
number of areas have access to winter cultivation, hence
the impact at national level is minimal. The potential
for winter cultivation is not fully utilized. This is
why government and other agencies provide support
through various activities to increase production of
winter crops in order to supplement production from the
main summer harvest. The majority of the local markets
registered an increase in maize prices this month
compared to last month. Price increases, especially in
areas that experienced food production problems this
season, could have negative affects on poor household’s
food security. ADMARC has opened its markets for sale of
maize to consumers at MK25.00/kg. |
