Following UNICEF’s conceptual nutrition framework, we focus on immediate/underlying determinants of malnutrition. When linked to a number of challenges leading to household and community vulnerability, malnutrition causes are exacerbated:
• Food insecurity and inadequate feeding practices increase disease susceptibility    and prevalence therefore – aggravate immediate causes of malnutrition
• High HIV prevalence threatens and reverses child survival and development by –
impacting on immediate causes of malnutrition
• Increasing levels of poverty and dwindling livelihoods – exacerbate immediate         causes of malnutrition
• Weak governance and deteriorating provision of basic services – feed into all    causes of malnutrition
