Plans for clean water

Water from the Incomati River will soon supplement Maputo city’s drinking water supply

The Mozambican government regards safe water and good sanitation for all as key development challenges. At present only about 25% of Mozambique’s 18 million people have direct access to safe water. In rural areas, women and children spend hours collecting water – energy and time that could otherwise be spent productively in school or at work.

The water supply company Aguas de Mocambique is planning to use water from the Incomati River to supply its customers in Maputo city according to the daily paper Noticias. The company's director, Octavio Almeida, says that studies are underway to find alternative sources to the Umbeluzi River in order to secure a permanent water supply for Maputo city.

Commenting on the establishment of an impoundment and treatment station in the Incomati River basin, Octavio Almeida explained that the idea is to cater for the northern part of Maputo city, which is currently undersupplied. Aguas de Mocambique’s water supply network reaches about 50% of Maputo city’s population. The target is to reach around 80% by 2012.
